The Filipino devotion to the Santo Niño, or the Holy Child Jesus, started in the Philippines in the 16th century when a religious relic icon of the Child Jesus was given as a gift by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the Year 1521 to a local tribal leader.
The Holy Child’s image is liturgically celebrated during weekly Mass, novenas, and Catholic holidays in the Philippines. The Santo Niño is replicated in many homes with different titles reinterpreted in various areas of the country. It is one of the most beloved and recognizable cultural icons in the country.
Our Holy Father Pope Francis said that the Santo Niño reminds us of our call to spread the reign of Christ throughout the world.
